The Cobourg Police Service is a long-time supporter of the Fare Share Food Bank, its auxiliary collecting 23,984 lb. of food and $31,120 in donations through their monthly Cram-A-Cruiser events last year.
But summer is a slow time for food-bank support, and the Cobourg Police Services Board approved a brainstorm expressed by Chair Adam Bureau at their May meeting – a competitive food drive, pitting the Cobourg Police Service against its Port Hope counterpart for the whole month of August.
Drop boxes will be placed both in the police station and in town hall, promotional events like videos will be planned, and in the end a reckoning will be made.
The losing police service, as its penalty, will have to stage a fundraising car wash for Fare Share on some Saturday after August. Any member of the service who cannot participate would pay a penalty, such as a monetary donation to the food bank.
“I think it would be a great idea to challenge each other as a friendly rivalry.”
The motion was made and passed.
