Northumberland Accessibility Advisory Committee launches recruitment for new members during National AccessAbility Week

In Local

National AccessAbility Week, taking place from May 26th to June 1st, is an opportunity to promote accessibility and inclusion throughout the community, while also acknowledging the invaluable contributions made by Canadians with disabilities. This year’s theme, “Advocating for an Accessible Northumberland,” emphasizes the importance of inclusivity and amplifying the voices of those with disabilities.

This year during National AccessAbility Week, residents who identify as having a disability or related lived experience are invited to apply to join the Northumberland Accessibility Advisory Committee (NAAC) and share their knowledge, perspectives, and feedback to help shape a more accessible Northumberland.

The NAAC plays a pivotal role in advocating for accessibility and fostering a more inclusive environment within Northumberland. Collaborating closely with Northumberland County Council and staff, the NAAC works to ensure that County services, programs and facilities are accessible to everyone.

“Northumberland County is committed to ensuring that people of all ages and abilities can enjoy the same opportunities as they live, work, visit and invest in our community,” states County Councillor and NAAC Member John Logel. “Joining the NAAC as County Council’s representative has raised my awareness of the important work being done by the committee to drive positive change and ensure all members of our community can fully participate and thrive.”

By joining the NAAC, members will provide guidance and feedback on County policies and initiatives to enhance the accessibility of County services.

“The Northumberland Accessibility Advisory Committee serves as a crucial voice for accessibility,” states County HR/Accessibility Coordinator and staff liaison to the NAAC Andrea Nicholson.

“We are seeking passionate individuals who are interested in making a difference and helping to remove barriers to access in our community.”
Interested residents can submit an online application by June 7, 2024 by visiting Northumberland.ca/Accessibility. To request the application form in an alternative format, please email accessibility@northumberland.ca or call 905-372-3329 ext. 2327.
