Over 700 people descended on Cobourg for the third annual Cameco Step-Up for Mental Health 5 Km Fun Run.

The event kicked off at 8:30 a.m. with participants heading west along Queen Street then through the streets of Cobourg and finishing up where it started.

Vice-President of Fuel Services Division for Cameco, Dale Clark said it was a “awesome day.”

“The weather is great, the turnout is great – all for a great cause.”

Last year’s year had approximately 600 participants and Clark said the numbers keep going up each year.

“It’s a popular event and it’s in demand.”

Kyle Legere from Trenton came in first with a time of 18-minutes and 58 seconds.

Jordan Bentley from Hamilton Township was second with a time of 19-minues and 57 seconds.

For some it was just a time to go for a nice walk or casual run.

One of the youngest participants was eight-month-old Elyse Blackburn who was accompanied by her grandmother Nancy Bruce.

And finish up for the day was 74-year-old Peter Deighan along with Jane Cornell from Cobourg and Bill Shaw from Peterborough.

Communications spokesperson from Cameco, Sara Forsey said Cameco matches the registration fees and on Saturday a total amount raised over $60,000.

“The community comes out – it’s a family friendly event. There is lots of young people, children, pets, all the way up to older people.”

“It’s friendly for all abilities.

Since the starting of Step-Up for Mental Health, Cameco has raised over $280,000 which all stays in Northumberland County to support mental health initiatives.
