A report of a missing surfer prompted a large-scale emergency response on Saturday evening, June 6, 2026.
Emergency services were dispatched to Lake Ontario off Victoria Beach in Cobourg at approximately 5:40 p.m. following reports that a surfer was unable to return to shore after being pushed approximately 300 to 400 metres offshore by strong winds.
Responding agencies included the Cobourg Police Service, Cobourg Fire Department, Northumberland County Paramedics, Ontario Provincial Police and the Canadian Coast Guard.
Police officers, firefighters and paramedics searched the shoreline using binoculars while Cobourg Police deployed a drone to scan the water. Coast Guard crews conducted a search from the lake, and an OPP helicopter was also called in to assist.
After more than two hours of searching, the operation was called off at approximately 7:45 p.m. after crews were unable to locate either the reported surfer or a surfboard.
Acting Fire Chief Kevin Ashfield said emergency responders believe the individual likely made it safely back to shore.
“When you get that call and you think somebody might be in the water, it’s best to get everyone here,” said Ashfield.
“If we spend an hour or two and don’t find anything, that’s a good outcome as long as at the end they can confirm the person is safe.”
Ashfield noted that conditions on Lake Ontario can be deceptive, particularly when strong offshore winds are present.
“There is a lot of undertow here, especially really close to the pier, so you have to be very careful,” he said. “It can pull you under really quick. It can drag you out.”
With strong offshore winds affecting the area throughout the day, Ashfield warned that people using flotation devices can quickly find themselves being carried farther from shore than expected.
Emergency officials are reminding residents and visitors to exercise caution around the lake, particularly during periods of strong winds and rough water conditions.
