The Easter Bunny made an early appearance in Cobourg’s west end, bringing smiles—and chocolate—to local students.
Danielle Kent-Greenhorne, a crossing guard stationed on Burnham Street near Burnham Public School, traded in her usual safety vest for a set of bunny ears and a full costume on Wednesday, April 1, 2025.
With rain in the forecast for the following day, Kent-Greenhorne decided to celebrate early, ensuring the children she greets daily wouldn’t miss out on the seasonal fun.
“It’s for my kids,” she said. “I have over 100 kids here and I like doing it.”
The festive gesture is part of a growing tradition. Kent-Greenhorne marks holidays throughout the year with costumes and small treats—handing out chocolate eggs at Easter and candy canes at Christmas.
“They all look forward to it,” she added.
Now approaching four years on the job, Kent-Greenhorne says being a crossing guard is about more than just helping students safely across the street.
“The kids make my day every day.”
Outside of her role at the crosswalk, she works as a personal support worker and brings that same sense of care and community to her interactions with students and families.
Her enthusiasm for dressing up has even led her to buying her own collection of costumes.
When the final bell rang on Wednesday, students rushed out to greet “Miss Danielle,” many stopping to grab a few chocolate eggs before heading home—ending the school day on a sweet note.
Cobourg Police were also watching traffic along Burnham Street. Recently there have been a few close calls with traffic not obeying the crossing guard and nearly hitting students.
Today’s Northumberland spoke to a few parents at the location who said it is a very dangerous area the way people drive.
