Hamilton Township is moving forward with plans to improve road safety in Bewdley by introducing a new Community Safety Zone along a busy stretch of Rice Lake Drive North.
A staff report, which was approved by council at Tuesday’s meeting, recommends designating a section of Rice Lake Drive North—from 170 metres north of Cavan Road to 70 metres north of Mill Street—as a Community Safety Zone. The speed limit in this area will be reduced from 50 km/h to 40 km/h.
The proposal comes in response to community concerns about traffic safety with the current speed limit near the waterfront, a popular area that sees increased congestion during peak tourism seasons.
The township also consulted the Police Service Board, which expressed support for the proposed safety measures.
Community Safety Zones are established under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act and are typically used in areas where public safety is a concern, such as near schools, parks, and senior facilities. In these zones, traffic fines—particularly for speeding—are increased to encourage safer driving behavior.
Staff will publish a public notice on the municipal website and proceed with preparing a by-law to formalize the changes. The by-law is expected to be presented at the April 16 council meeting.
Installation of signage marking the new Community Safety Zone would follow approval, alerting drivers to the reduced speed limit and stricter enforcement.
