Although he was beat by a rookie, Cobourg Mayor Lucas Cleveland enjoyed a round of disc golf in Cobourg on Friday, October 17, 2025.
Cleveland was joined by former Coast Guard Captain Colin Slade as the two played a round of frisbee golf at the course located at Legion Fields just off D’Arcy Street.
The two conversed at the opening of the new Coast Guard Station on Friday morning and found a common bond of frisbee (disc) golf. A few hours later the two enjoyed a round of disc golf.
With a round of frisbee golf taking approximately 30-minutes Cleveland couldn’t pass up the opportunity over his lunch break.
While not under perfect conditions with a slight rain throughout play, the two thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
One of the things about disc golf Cleveland said is that you can play a round of nine in a short period of time and get back to work.
As an avid disc golfer for approximately 10 years, Cleveland said it’s very little tax dollars spent on the course, yet the rewards are already showing with a number of people from children to adults using the course.
“You can play a fun game at a really low price (free) and it’s just something I’ve always believed in.”
Although the mayor has been playing for a decade, he was beat by Slade who has only been playing for three months.
“We’ll call it beginners luck,” Cleveland said with a chuckle.
“But that’s part of the fun of it.”
Just recently Cleveland was joined by four youths under 10-years-old on the course.
“You give them each a disc (frisbee) and you play best ball. This is such an accessible sport. It gets you outside and it can be played in four seasons or even at night.”
“Free is key – all you need is a frisbee and some time.”
When Cleveland first started they didn’t have the set-up like now. A tree was picked as the basket.
“It’s one of those games – it’s a great past time, physically active and you’re in nature.”
