Video – Coats for Kids (and Adults) Continues in the Area

In Community, Local

Local man picking up the torch and carrying it on for the Coats for Kids program.

The program was started over three decades ago by Rod Baker former owner of Baker Cleaners, former Salvation Army Community and Family Services Director Dave Alexander and former Manager of McDonald’s Kim Harvey.

The group of men got together and discussed the need for gently used winter wear to be donated to the Salvation Army to be distributed to youths in the community.

The year was 1993 and the spark of an idea created a coat drive with an estimated 14,000 youths receiving winter wear.

Since then all three men have retired and Baker Cleaners has been sold.

But local resident Archie Anderson is picking up the torch with the new owners of Baker Cleaners.

“It kind of went by the wayside, so I’ve decided to pick up the torch,” said Anderson standing outside Baker Cleaners on Saturday, October 4, 2025.

Anderson was at Baker Cleaners over the weekend collection donations.

Even though Baker has retired, the new owners have graciously offered once again to clean all clothing donations which are then sent off to the Salvation Army where they will be distributed throughout the community.

“It’s for everybody,” said Anderson.

“There is a great need in the community. All sizes and all ages. Hats, gloves, footwear, jackets anything at all that someone would like to donated we are more than happy to take them.”

If anyone would like to help out, all donations are being accepted for the month of October at Baker Cleaners at 12 Elgin Street East in Cobourg.
