The Canadian Disc Golf Championships wrapped up on Sunday, September 14, 2025 after being held on various courses throughout the area.
The tournament started on Friday, September 14 and was held at various courses in Selwyn, Newcastle, Bowmanville and Haute Goat in the Municipality of Port Hope.
The international tournament brought in 495 competitors from Canada, the United States and Europe.
Today’s Northumberland spoke with Tournament Director Darrell Bankes on Sunday as competitors were on the course for their final round.
Bankes summed up the sport by saying disc golf is like regular golf, only they play with frisbees/discs.
“We throw them through the air. It’s the exact same game as golf, only we can just do it in a nicer landscape. It’s much more fun and it’s faster and much more casual.”
With competitors coming from Canada, the United States and at least two from Europe, Bankes said the sport is getting much more attention with even a pro-circuit.
The sport is very inexpensive with most courses being free. Haute Goat charges $12 per round.
An entire set of discs costs approximately $100.
“The best thing about it is watching discs fly through the air – it’s way more fun than balls.”
Cobourg Mayor Lucas Cleveland said Port Hope and Cobourg came together as one of the sponsors for the event.
Cleveland said he’s been a “frisbee golf nerd” being into the sport for approximately 10 years.
“This is a very quickly growing sport. It’s an incredible family sport because it only requires a plastic frisbee to play.”
“It’s a quick, fun and inexpensive game that we can all play.”
