Barrie Mountney will remember his trip to the area on Friday, August 15, 2025 after reeling in a huge salmon while competing in the Great Ontario Salmon Derby.
Mountney who is from Shannonville had been fishing south of Port Hope on Lake Ontario since 5 a.m. on Friday when around 8:30 a.m. he got the hit on the large fish.
“We knew it was a good one because he was stealing lots of line.”
After a 20-minute battle, he knew it was a “good one” so it was time to get to shore, pack up the boat and drive to Cobourg Marina for the weigh-in.
Back on shore, he loaded up the boat and drive to Cobourg Marina for the weigh-in.
By the size of the salmon, Mountney’s arms might be a bit sore on Saturday, but nothing was going to stop him getting the fished weighed.
It was the only catch of the day, but it was worth it with the salmon weighing in at 29.18 pounds.
Mountney regularly visits the area of Wicklow and Port Hope area for fishing and so far – it’s the biggest one he’s caught this year.
Realistically speaking, Mountney said it won’t win the grand prize, “but it might put us on the leader board for the week maybe. May get something out of it.”
