Thefts, Break-ins and Mischief Cases Worth Nearly $300K Solved

An individual has been charged in connection with numerous criminal incidents in the Carrying Place area, dating from 2021 to 2025.

The thefts, break-ins and mischief incidents began at a subdivision in 2021 and continued until recently. Damage and losses are estimated to be worth nearly $300,000.

Members of the Quinte West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial (OPP) had begun the initial investigation, with the East Region Community Street Crime Unit joining the probe in July of this year.

On Wednesday, August 6, 2025, Community Street Crime and Quinte West OPP officers executed search warrants at a residence on Parkview Road in Carrying Place and a vehicle. One person was arrested without incident.

Officers recovered a large quantity of stolen items, including power tools and electronics worth more than $17,000.

As a result of the investigation, Mathew GARDINER, age 31 of Carrying Place, has been charged with:

Break and enter to commit an indictable offence – four counts

Wearing a disguise to commit an offence – four counts

Theft over $5000 – six counts

Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000

Mischief over $5000

Mischief under $5000 – five counts

Failing to comply with a probation order – eight counts

The accused was held in custody, with a bail hearing scheduled before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville on Thursday, August 7, 2025.
