Video – Residents Concerns About Construction in West End of Cobourg Go from Bad to Worse

In Local

A resident who lives in the area of Pebble Beach contacted Today’s Northumberland last week concerning road work in Cobourg’s west end.

Construction on the King Street West culvert began in mid-June, and is expected to take four months. The project includes widening the road platform to accommodate future bike lanes and sidewalks. A temporary traffic signal will manage traffic flow during the construction, with one lane remaining open.

The resident stated to Today’s Northumberland that, “I pass through the work zone located on King Street West at least twice a day and I don’t believe there’s adequate protection for pedestrians passing through the work zone. Fairly often there are pedestrians and bicyclists traversing the work zone and they are left with little to no room when vehicular traffic passes through. I think there needs to be some more thought put into the protection of the public with regards to this work zone because I can see someone potentially getting hurt from this current layout.”

But it seems the Town may have overreacted just a tad.

Communications spokesperson Kara Euale said, “signage is being installed to prohibit pedestrian access through the work zone. Cyclists and pedestrians will follow the temporary signals, similar to motorists.”

Unfortunately the signs posted indicate that unless you’re in some typical of vehicle, you’re not allowed to pass through and enter into the area of Pebble Beach.
