A home was destroyed by fire on Sunday, May 11, 2025 in Alnwick/Haldimand Township.

Shortly before noon on Sunday, numerous 9-1-1 calls were received reporting a house on fire on Grandview Drive, overlooking Rice Lake (near Roseneath).

With Sunday’s clear, blue sky, black smoke could be seen as far away as Cobourg and Peterborough.

Photos people took before fire crews arrived show the home totally engulfed in flames.

When crews from Alnwick/Haldimand Township and Hamilton Township arrived it was a defensive attack with the fire spreading to a car in the driveway.

The fire was deemed under control shortly after 1 p.m.

No one was home at the time of the fire.

One firefighter was taken to hospital with a minor leg injury.

Hamilton Township Fire Chief Mike Robinson said the fire is not suspicious at this time and damage could reach a million dollars.

Heavy equipment was brought in to get at the hot spots of the fire.

A GoFundMe has been set up for the family for those who wish to donate.
