A special surprise ceremony took place at the regular training night of the 598 Sabre Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Cobourg.
Two of the Cadets were honoured with the King Charles III Coronation Medal with family and friends in attendance.
Commanding Officer Capt. Matthew G.D. Slade nominated the two cadets for their for their works with 598 Sabre Squadron and their extensive volunteer work in the community.
Prior to the awarding of the medals, Capt. Slade told the audience about the medal and the recipients.
“The medal I am about to present is not one that is given out lightly.”
“The King Charles III Coronation Medal was created to mark the historic occasion of His Majesty King Charles III’s coronation. It honours Canadians-both civilian and military-who have made meaningful contributions to their country and community. It is a national symbol of gratitude and recognition, and to receive it is to stand among a distinguished few who have made lasting impacts in the lives of others.”
Capt. Slade said it’s more than the service hours or rank, “it’s about character. It’s about rising to challenges, giving without expectation, and representing the values of leadership, citizenship, and service to others with humility and strength.”
“I am honoured to present the King Charles III Coronation Medal to two remarkable individuals whose service, leadership, and character have brought honour to themselves, their squadron, and their community – Warrant Officer First Class William Hall and Warrant Officer Second Class Alyssa Slade.
During 2024, WO2 Slade accumulated 148 volunteer hours within the cadet program and contributed additional time through the Royal Canadian Legion
WO1 Hall volunteered 131 hours within the program and extended his service to the community by working with the Cobourg Lions Club.
“Their extensive records, accomplishments, and impact on their peers, the squadron, and the broader community are undeniable. Both cadets embody the values of leadership, dedication, service, and excellence and have consistently surpassed the expectations of their roles within the Royal Canadian Air Cadet program.”
Warrant Officer 2nd Class (WO2) Alyssa Slade
Qualities and Contributions
WO2 Alyssa Slade is a cadet whose exceptional qualities set her apart as an extraordinary leader and community servant. Her ability to inspire others, maintain a standard of excellence, and balance leadership responsibilities with community involvement.
Leadership and Guidance:
As the Squadron Warrant Officer, WO2 Slade leads by example. She commands respect not through authority alone but through her consistent actions, positive attitude, and ability to connect with cadets of all ranks.
She mentors junior cadets, patiently teaching them drill, deportment, and cadet values while fostering a positive and supportive squadron culture.
During training nights, WO2 Slade is the cadet staff’s go-to leader for coordinating activities, ensuring cadet engagement, and maintaining discipline with professionalism.
Character and Personal Qualities:
WO2 Slade’s unwavering reliability is reflected in her 100% attendance for mandatory training and 73.33% of all extracurriculars open to the squadron. Her commitment sets the standard for others to follow.
She is known for her humility, kindness, and ability to motivate her peers. WO2 Slade strikes the perfect balance of compassion and firmness, qualities that make her an outstanding leader.

Warrant Officer 1st Class (WO1) William Hall

WO1 William Hall is a cadet leader who has earned the respect and admiration of his peers through his hard work, professionalism, and community involvement. As the Squadron Chief Warrant Officer, the senior-most cadet position, WO1 Hall’s leadership has been instrumental in the success and cohesion of 598 Sabre Squadron.
Leadership and Mentorship:
As the senior cadet, WO1 Hall leads by example, taking pride in mentoring junior cadets and helping them develop their skills. He fosters a culture of accountability and excellence, ensuring all cadets are set up for success.
WO1 Hall has been pivotal in coordinating squadron parades, leading drill practices, and delivering high-quality instruction during training sessions.
As the most senior cadet at the recent Area Directed Activity, WO1 Hall was instrumental in the overall success, organizing cadets from multiple units to be successful.
Showing his passion for instructing, WO1 Hall was selected to instruct in the recent SEAO PO 509/513 workshop and received excellent accolades from the staff he worked with.
His previous role as Standards Warrant Officer reflects his commitment to maintaining high training and performance standards within the squadron.

Beyond cadet service, WO1 Hall volunteers with the Cobourg Lions Club, contributing to charitable initiatives that benefit the local community. His commitment to serving others reflects his maturity, selflessness, and dedication to making a difference.
