Breaking News – Northumberland OPP Investigating After Inmate Dies from Warkworth Institution

The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating after an inmate died from Warkworth Institution.

On January 3, 2025, at approximately 9:30 p.m., the Northumberland OPP received a report regarding an inmate who was transported to a local hospital and later airlifted to another medical centre.

On January 12, 2025, the 30-year-old male, from Toronto, was pronounced deceased.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of the individual.

James Gallant had been serving a nine-year, nine-month, and 19-day sentence which began on June 16, 20217 for offences including robbery, disguise with intent, assault of a peace officer, failure to comply with probation order, trafficking in schedule I/II substances, among others.

The Northumberland OPP Crime Unit is conducting the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance from the OPP Forensic Identification Services.

The Correctional Service of Canada said all cases involving the death of an inmate will be reviewed.
