NHH Celebrates Its Culture of Safety

Northumberland Hills Hospital celebrated its culture of safety last month by honouring staff members with Good Catch Awards presented during Canadian Patient Safety Week.

President and Chief Executive Officer Susan Walsh described the week’s activities at the December hospital board meeting, including award winners Brittany Lowery, Danielle Parker and Sarah Meringer, whose Awareness to Action submission highlighted the importance of double-checking before medication administration, verifying patient allergies and dietary restrictions, and providing patient privacy and doublechecks during bedside Transfer of Accountability.

Good Catch Awards are a patient-safety initiative that recognizes and encourages staff to report patient-safety incidents by shining a positive light on reporting.

Additional congratulations were extended to Bonnie Bisset who won the prize for completing the Professional Practice Postmortem virtual activity.

This year’s theme was “What comes to mind when you think about health-care harm? Let’s broaden our understanding together.”

A variety of activities were planned along this theme, including an interactive display and a lunch-and-learn session. And to highlight the contribution of mental and spiritual wellness to patient safety, NHH also welcomed the Colborne Library Ukulele Band to its Main Street Bistro for a special performance.

“We were really pleased to have the group, and they gave a great liveliness to the week,” Walsh said.
