Northumberland OPP – Cobourg Man Charged with Impaired, Dangerous Operation Following Collision (Name Released)

Members of the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a driver following a collision on Highway 401.

On July 11, 2024, at approximately 7:35 a.m., emergency services responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision on Highway 401 eastbound in the Municipality of Port Hope. The Municipality of Port Hope Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and OPP arrived on scene where two occupants of one of the vehicles, attended a local hospital with minor injuries.

During the investigation, officers formed the grounds that the driver of the other vehicle was impaired. The individual was subsequently arrested and transported to a local detachment.

Joseph BARRETT, 31-years-old, from Cobourg, has been charged with:

–      Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs

–      Dangerous operation.

The accused is due to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at a future date.

All three lanes of the highway were closed from approximately 8:35 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. for the investigation and removal of involved vehicles.

The OPP remind motorists that no amount of alcohol or drug is acceptable to consume and drive. Report impaired drivers. Should you observe a suspected impaired driver, please dial 911 or contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122.
