A Number of Unsafe Commercial Motor Vehicles Taken Off the Road in Grafton

In Local, Police Blotter

At least two commercial motor vehicles (CMV) were pulled off the road after inspections found serious defects with the vehicles on Friday, April 21, 2023.

Northumberland OPP along with the Ministry of Transportation held a commercial motor vehicle inspection at the MTO yards just off of Highway 401 in Grafton.

Throughout the day, OPP would escort commercial motor vehicles off of Highway 401 for the inspection.

Numerous vehicles were taken out of service until repairs were made, but some violations were so serious that the license plates were taken off the vehicles.

Some of the more serious concerns were on one CMV the drive shaft bushing was worn to the point that it was no longer safe to structurally support the drive shaft.  Investigators said the drive shaft would eventually fail and possibly become a projectile along the highway.

The CMV was taken out of service and the plates removed forcing the vehicle to require a full mechanical safety before it can be plated again for road use.

On another CMV, part of the floor on a cab was completely rusted through so much that you could see the ground.

The project on Friday was held in conjunction with Safe Travels 401.
