Officials Believe Cause of Fire in Downtown Cobourg Was Burning Plastic Off Of Copper Wire

In Police Blotter

Cobourg Police are working along side members of the Cobourg Fire Department to determine the exact cause of a fire that occurred in downtown Cobourg on Monday, March 6, 2023.

A press release on Tuesday by the Cobourg Police Service stated the investigation is being conducted by the Cobourg Police Service Criminal Investigations Branch in collaboration wit the Forensic Identification Services, Special Constables and members of the Cobourg Fire Department.

On Monday at approximately 2:30 p.m. members of the Cobourg Fire Department were dispatched to 1 King Street East for reports of a structure fire.

When crews arrived there was light smoke coming from one of the front windows facing King Street East.

Wearing breathing apparatus, fire crews entered the building and extinguished a small fire in one of the units.

On Tuesday, police and fire officials worked to determine a cause of the fire.

Police have said they believe at this time the fire was caused by a person burning plastic off of copper wire in one of the units.

The person believed the fire was extinguished and left the unit.

The investigation is continuing but at this time there is believed to be no criminal intent for the cause of the fire.

Anyone with information or video surveillance footage of the area of King Street East and Division Street is asked to contact police at 905-372-6821 extension 2202 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS or online at www.stopcrimehere.ca. Tips received through Crime Stoppers may be eligible for a cash reward.
