Update – Machine Likely Started Multi-Million Dollar Fire in Port Hope

In Local

Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services believe they have found the cause to a multi-million dollar fire.

Shortly after 9 pm on Thursday, May 12, 2022 emergency services received a 9-1-1 call stating a commercial building on Ward Street was on fire and could see flames coming from the centre of the large commercial structure.

When crews arrived they battled the flames from the inside while a platform truck was set up monitoring the roof area.

Deputy Chief Jeff Ogden said firefighters provided a quick, aggressive attack on the fire, preventing it from spreading to the rest of the building.

It’s believed the fire started in one of the machines near the centre of the building and spread to the roof area.

Heavy smoke permeated throughout the entire business.

Damage estimates could reach upwards of five million dollars.
