Fun Times for Everyone at the Castleton Sports Club Children’s Fishing Derby

Castleton Sports Club Fishing Derby took place over the weekend north of Castleton.

The fishing derby for children 14-and-under took place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 30 and May 1, 2022 at Ryken’s pond.

Jeff Turney who is a Director on the Castleton Sports Club said the fishing derby used to be operated through the Warkworth Service Club, but members decided to see if the Castleton Sports Club was interested in running the tournament.

“I went to our executive and we decided that we needed to do this. It’s right up our alley.”

The tournament has been taking place since 1986, but hasn’t happened for the past two years due to COVID.

“It’s been a great event,” said Turney on Sunday.

With members of the Castleton Sports Club knowing how to run sports activities, a fishing derby was something new for them.

“We were on pins and needles putting it on.”

But they had a blueprint how it had been run the previous years and that helped immensely.

Over the course of the two days it’s estimated that approximately 360 children took part in the event.

The pond was stocked a few weeks ago with hundreds of rainbow trout and it was obvious from the smiles, the children and their parents were having a great time fishing.

There were approximately $4,000 worth of prizes that sponsors generously donated and a barbeque.
