Port Hope native Cal Quantrill of Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Guardians joined host Jeff Gard on the inaugural Sports Spotlight show this week on Northumberland 89.7 FM.
Quantrill played minor sports locally like baseball for the former Port Hope River Rats (now part of the Northumberland Baseball Association) and hockey for the former Port Hope Phantoms (now part of Northumberland Minor Hockey) and at Trinity College School. He played college baseball for Stanford University and graduated with an engineering degree. He was a first-round draft pick, eighth overall, by the San Diego Padres in 2016 and began his MLB career with the club before an August 2020 trade sent him to Cleveland.
Cal is the son of former MLB pitcher Paul Quantrill. Paul and his wife Alyson were key contributors to minor baseball in Port Hope.
Sports Spotlight airs Thursdays at 4 p.m. on Northumberland 89.7.
