Municipality of Port Hope Accepts Challenge to ‘Keep the County Clean’

In Local

Northumberland County has once again called on each municipality to participate in the ‘Mayors Keep the County Clean’ challenge – a friendly week-long litter clean-up event beginning April 18, 2022.

“After a two year pause on this initiative due to the pandemic, I am very happy to see the ‘Mayors Keep the County Clean’ challenge resume,” notes Bob Sanderson, Mayor of the Municipality of Port Hope. “This is a community-wide effort and I call on everyone to participate, if possible. It’s a great way to bring awareness to Earth Day and support a greener and cleaner planet.”

Litter clean-up can take place in our public spaces, including at the beaches, along the Ganaraska River paths, on our trails, at our parks and other green spaces.

Volunteers can register to participate at the Development Team Office, located at 5 Mill Street South in Port Hope. Individuals or groups will receive a kit that contains a safety vest, gloves, garbage bags and safety information.

During the clean-up, full bags of garbage can be left roadside and will be picked up by municipal staff. Volunteers are asked to ensure that the bags are placed well back from the road, for the safety of drivers and volunteers.

Large, hazardous, or dangerous items are not to be touched. Each kit will have a reporting sheet for these types of materials. Completed reporting sheets can be returned to staff at 5 Mill Street South and the items will be collected by staff.

For questions about volunteer registration, please email April Potter, or call 905-885- 2431 x2500.
