Student Survey is First Step to Loyalist College’s Military-Connected Campus

In Local

On February 7, 2022, Loyalist College launched a survey designed to identify the needs of military-connected students, and strengthen its relationship with the Canadian Armed Forces, Veterans and their families. Results of the survey will be used to create an academic and social support framework for military personnel studying at the College, establishing Loyalist as a Military-Connected Campus (MCC).

“With close proximity to the Canadian Forces Base in Trenton, our community is enriched by the significant population of service members and their families,” said Dr. Ann Marie Vaughan, Loyalist College President and CEO. “Whether they are actively serving, Veterans, or their family members, we recognize the unique set of skills and needs military-connected students have that inform their learning experiences. At Loyalist College, we are always looking to identify ways in which we can enhance access to educational opportunities and support services for learners of all ages as they seek to upskill themselves or retrain for new careers. This survey will help us develop inclusive and custom supports which are welcoming to the military community as we deliver on our commitment of becoming a Military-Connected Campus.”

As a Military-Connected Campus, Loyalist College will provide specialized academic and social programming to support military-connected students’ success, including community networking opportunities, recognition for co-curricular training, and leadership development. To support the development of these programs and services, the survey results will provide the College with a more informed understanding of the distinct set of life experiences which service members, Veterans, and their families possess.

“The survey will offer critical insight into the experiences of military-connected students,” said Dr. Darryl Cathcart, Release Point Education. “The findings will inform how we implement the military-connected approach at Loyalist College and create a more positive learning environment for a group of students who are often underserved.”

In addition to the voluntary survey, which investigates the postsecondary experiences of military personnel at the College, Loyalist is encouraging interested students to consider becoming a student ambassador for the Military-Connected Campus initiative.

Military-connected students who participate in a focus group will receive a $100 gift card to the Loyalist College Bookstore.
