Two Albert Street Buildings Coming Down in Cobourg

In Editor Choice, Local

Heavy machinery from Eagleson Construction tore down a building in downtown Cobourg on Wednesday, February 17, 2021.

The address of 9 Albert Street was slated for demolition, but when the lockdown commenced for COVID-19, it delayed the demolition.

On Wednesday, two pieces of heavy machinery ripped apart the building that was believed to have been built in the 1960’s.

The building has been vacant for several years.

On Thursday morning, it’s expected the two-storey building on the southwest corner of Division and Albert Streets will also be torn down.

It once housed a veterinarians office, but was converted into a upstairs and main floor apartment.

Glenn McGlashon, Director of the Planning and Development Division told Today’s Northumberland that staff has been working with the owner and developer of the properties over the last several months.

McGlashon said, “the project is an exciting re-development proposal that involves mixed commercial and residential uses in three-storey buildings situated along the two street frontages, with surface parking tucked in behind. Development applications are being filed by the owner with the Town for a rezoning and site plan approval and further details will be coming to Council in the very near future. The proponent recently developed the Beachwalk Place mixed-use condominium building to the south of the subject properties.”
