Northumberland OPP – Weapons Seized – Richmond Hill Man Charged With Careless Use of a Firearm

(MUNICIPALITY OF PORT HOPE, ON) – On Saturday August 15, 2020, shortly after 4:00 pm, members from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received multiple reports of what was believed to be gunfire within a neighborhood in the Garden Hill area.

Residents could here gunfire and believed that stray rounds were striking trees and out buildings on their properties.

Officers arrived at the location and could hear the sound of gunshots being fired in the distance east of the neighborhood.

Members of the Port Hope Fire Department were just leaving a location east of the neighborhood after attending a call for service, when they notified police that they had located several males target shooting in a field on Grist Mill Road.

As a result of the investigation that included assistance from Central Region Forensic Identification Services (FIS). Firearms and ammunition were seized, and the registered owner of the firearms Ehsan Kazerouni HAGHIGHAT (age 36) of Richmond Hill, Ontario, was arrested and charged under the Criminal Code of Canada with Careless Use of a Firearm.

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on October 28, 2020.
