Terrifying Afternoon As Bullets Narrowly Miss Garden Hill Residents

In Editor Choice, Local

It was a terrifying afternoon two Garden Hill residents on Saturday, August 15, 2020.

Garden Hill resident Nathan Piggot was outside his home on Larose Crescent talking with his neighbour before 4 p.m. when they heard gunshots in the distance.

They really didn’t think that much of it – until the bullets started zipping by them.

Piggot’s neighbour quickly took his small children inside.

“We were hiding behind his house. We couldn’t believe it was bullets.”

“We found one that had struck his shed. Then we ran for cover.”

“They were hitting trees near us and our sheds.”

In total they heard approximately 30 shots zip by them.

After everyone was safe, the men wanted to find out where the shots were coming from and got into a vehicle to search the area.

After searching the area, including nearby farms they went back home where they met up with an OPP officer.  It was at that point, once again, the bullets started zipping by.

The officer called for back-up and with the help from the Port Hope Fire Department who were just leaving a location east of the neighbourhood, police located several males who were target shooting in a field on Grist Mill Road.

As a result of the investigation that included assistance from Central Region Forensic Identification Services (FIS). Firearms and ammunition were seized, and the registered owner of the firearms Ehsan Kazerouni Haghighat (age 36) of Richmond Hill, Ontario, was arrested and charged under the Criminal Code of Canada with Careless Use of a Firearm.

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on October 28, 2020.

Piggot is a avid hunter and said people who are careless with firearms always give safety conscience firearm owners a bad name.

“As a hunter, you always know your target and beyond. It’s people that get their gun license and have no common sense that wreck it for everybody.”

Piggot worked out the shots were coming from approximately two kilometres away that were landing in his yard. It’s believed the person was shooting up a hill at a target.

“I was furious when I found out what happened and how careless the person.”
