Fire Engulfs Transport On Highway 401 in Alnwick/Haldimand Township

In Editor Choice, Local, Police Blotter

For the second time in three days a transport went up in flames on Highway 401 in Northumberland County.

On Sunday, June 21, 2020 at approximately 4 p.m. members of the Alnwick/Haldimand Township Fire Department responded to a transport fire in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 approximately two kilometres west of Percy Street in Colborne.

Black smoke could be seen in the direction of the fire from Grafton indicating fire crews had a working fire.

Members of Northumberland OPP stopped eastbound traffic as the cab was completely engulfed in flames when crews arrived.

With the intense heat the fire quickly spread to the trailer part which was empty at the time.

Eastbound lanes were closed for approximately two hours while westbound lanes were closed for a short period of time.

The driver stated he pulled over as he saw smoke coming from the engine area. When he opened the hood he tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher.

While crews were putting out the fire, it’s believed water mixed with fuel sent a large mushroom cloud into the sky.

Crews also extinguished a grass fire.

On Thursday morning the cab of a transport was destroyed by fire east of Cobourg in Hamilton Township.
