Youth Spots Purple Liquid Flowing Into Creek On Danforth Road North in Cobourg

In Editor Choice, Local

A non toxic food based product flowing into a nearby creek captured the attention of area residents on Brook Road North in Cobourg on Friday, April 24, 2020.

Nine–year-old Owen Mouncey was walking with his father along Brook Road North on Friday morning Owen noticed what looked like a purple substance flowing in the ditch.

Owen knew the right thing to do was call authorities and soon after Cobourg Police, Cobourg Fire Department and Environmental Services with the Town of Cobourg arrived at the site.

It was determined the liquid was a vanilla/water mix from cleaning out large bins at a factory on Brook Road North.

Once the product has been cleaned out of the bin, the new product which kills COVID-19 is put into the bin and shipped to Toronto emergency services.

Environmental services along with Cobourg Fire Department placed several booms in the ditch to stop the fluid from entering the creek.

Company President Shane Weatherby says, “it’s all food grade, no hazardous products.”

Environmental Services are continuing their investigation.

All services with the Town thanked Owen for his quick thinking in spotting and notifying authorities about the problem.
