It was one of the most emotional events for Hamilton Township Fire Chief in his three decades as a firefighter.
On Wednesday evening (April 15, 2020) firefighters from each station in Hamilton Township (Harwood, Bewdley and Baltimore) left their stations sharply at 7:30 p.m. in firetrucks to parade around the roads of Hamilton Township to recognize the efforts of everyone making sacrifices during the COVID-19 crisis.
It’s called, Hamilton Township Fire Department Spirit Nights for Essential Workers.
Shortly after arriving back at the hall, Serson spoke to Today’s Northumberland and said, “that was awesome.”
With emergency lights activated and sirens wailing, the trucks drove down main roads and side streets of the township. And people came out to cheer. With pots, pans and signs they came out.
Serson said the amount of people was in the hundreds.
“It brought tears to my eyes the number of people coming out. My heart is full after doing that. We’re doing it for the people that have locked themselves down for the last month, for the people who are fighting COVID-19, for the families who have lost the battle and all the front line workers who are out there everyday, who are working in retirement homes, hospitals and grocery stores.”
“I’ve seen a lot of great things in 33-years and tonight was one of the most incredible things I’ve ever felt as a first responder and I’m so proud of all the firefighters in Hamilton Township.”
Serson said that people generally think firefighters do good things, “but tonight and every Wednesday night until this is over we are paying tribute to the people who are doing things for all of us to be alive and well.”
Even Hamilton Township Mayor Bill Cane and Deputy Mayor Scott Jibb joined in the procession.
The idea for the event started last week when two children dropped off painted rocks at the fire station.
“And this was our way to say thanks to them and everyone else who is in this fight.”
The vehicles will try to take various routes each week around the township.
