A 24-year-old international student died as a result of a two-vehicle collision that occurred at the intersection of Taunton Road West and Thornton Road in Oshawa.
On Wednesday October 3, 2018 at approximately 2:06 a.m., officers from the Central West Division were called to a serious motor vehicle collision involving two vehicles at the intersection of Taunton Road West and Thornton Road. While stopped at the intersection facing westbound on Taunton Road, the driver of a grey Honda Civic was struck in the rear by a black Honda Civic. Both vehicles sustained severe damage, coming to rest on the opposite side of the intersection.
First responders attended the scene within minutes and provided medical assistance to the 24-year-old driver This male was transported to Lakeridge Health-Oshawa, where he succumbed to his injuries. His name is not being released at this time.
The driver of the black Honda Civic, Michael LA FORTY, age 36, of Oshawa, was arrested at the scene for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. That charge was later upgraded to: Impaired Operation Cause Death, with additional charges of Exceed 80 mgs. Causing Death and Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Death. He was held for a bail hearing.
Members of the DRPS – Collision Investigation Unit, attended the scene to conduct an investigation. The area of the roadway was closed for several hours while evidence was collected.
