Battery Cases Suspected Cause of Warehouse Fire In Cobourg

Firefighters were called to a possible warehouse fire at 701 Brook Road North in Cobourg shortly after 4 a.m.
Captain Chris Brown said the fire was reported after the owner spotted the fire by a video monitoring system from his residence.
When crews arrived on scene there was smoke coming from various areas of the roof.
Hamilton Township Fire Department were also called to the fire to assist Cobourg firefighters to find the seed of the fire.
“The challenge was finding out where the fire was,” said Brown.
Firefighters searched the building wearing breathing apparatus because of the thick smoke and found the fire on the north west side of the building.
Once fire apparatus was re-positioned near the area of the blaze, firefighters made entry to the building and extinguished the fire.
“It was easy to put out, but it was initially hard to find. But the crews did a great job locating the fire.”
Overhaul took several hours including ventilating the building from the smoke that permeated the entire warehouse.
“It appears it was battery packs of some sort,” said Brown.
“The actual fluid from the batteries was out in a separate container. It was basically plastic that was being burned.”
The damage was contained to heavy smoke throughout the building, but there is believed to be no structural damage.
The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it’s believed to have started in the area of the battery boxes.
There are several businesses in the warehouse.
