Northumberland OPP – Scrap Metal Thefts

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) –On the morning of July 30, 2018 the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to numerous reports of a suspicious vehicle and thefts from private properties in the Hamilton Township area.

Just after noon hour on July 30th officers from the Northumberland OPP Detachment located the suspect vehicle matching the provided descriptors, travelling on Division Street just north of Cobourg ON. With the assistance of the Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) the following three males that are here visiting Canada from Hungary were arrested.

Attila Jonas Mate age 18, Matyas Kolompar age 28, and Lajos Galamb age 18, all from Toronto,ON have been charged with the following offences:

· Theft Under $5000 (four counts)
· Possession of Property Obtained by Crime under $5000 (two counts)

Matyas Kolompar was additionally charged with driving while under suspension.

The accused males have been released with a date of August 29, 2018 to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg ON.

A large quantity of property has been recovered and investigators have linked the accused males to thefts that have been reported in the Durham region.

Northumberland OPP is asking for the public’s assistance with this ongoing investigation. If anyone has any information or believe they are victims of recent thefts of scrap metal are asked to contact Detective Constable Terry Wark of the Community Street Crime Unit at the Cobourg OPP Detachment 905 372-5421.
