The Northumberland Humane Society Thrift store are very grateful the fire over the weekend wasn’t worse, but are still waiting for an estimate on damages.
On Sunday, October 29, 2023 at approximately 4 a.m. Cobourg Fire Department attended a dumpster fire behind the rear of the Northumberland Humane Society Thrift Store on Covert Street at approximately 4 a.m.
The fire was quickly extinguished, but there was damage to the building with a number of siding panels melted.
On Monday, Executive Director Henny Venus spoke about the fire and the damage while waiting for the insurance company to call.
Dealing with the aftermath, Venus said he’s grateful the fire wasn’t worse, but every dollar spent on repairing the damage is dollars taken away from animal care.
“So it’s sad for the hardworking donor dollars that are being done by the volunteers at the Thrift Store.”
Along with vinyl siding, the dumpster needs to be replaced.
“That’s sad, because we’re losing money that way that we could be using for the animals.”
Venus also thanked members of the fire department for their quick response in extinguishing the fire.
Fifty-two-year-old Heather Gill-Fallowfield of Cobourg was arrested at the scene and charged with the following arson – damage to property contrary to section 434 of the Criminal Code.
