Cobourg’s Newest Rainbow Crosswalk Shining Brightly

In Local

Cobourg’s Rainbow Crosswalk was completed on May 25, 2023.

Second Street was closed for the week as Public Works staff prepared the new Crosswalk to be installed.

Thermoplastic sheets were installed rather than paint for the Rainbow Crosswalk. Thermoplastic is more durable and longer lasting than paint and is expected to help keep the vibrant colours of the rainbow crosswalk for much longer.

Bryan Farberman who is Director of Sales for Gentem said the product will last for two to five years, “depending on the asphalt conditions they are put on.”

The day of the installation there was a cold, windy breeze in Cobourg.

“In the perfect conditions, unfortunately we’re not working in the perfect conditions today.”

Farberman added, “there will be some maintenance. Snow plows kind of tear them up a bit. But it’s not the kind of thing where you have to replace the whole thing. You can fill in the cracks, or fill in the pieces that get chipped up if that happens.”

The company mainly produces pictograms for roads including any kind of signs that would be highly visible.

The budget for this years Rainbow Crosswalk was $11,700.
