Cramahe Township Home Destroyed by Fire

In Editor Choice, Local, Police Blotter

A Cramahe Township home was destroyed by fire on Sunday, May 21, 2023.

At approximately 1 p.m. all stations of Cramahe Township Fire Department were dispatched to a structure fire on Dawson Road north of Castleton, near the border of the Municipality of Trent Hills.

The caller reported the fire appears to have started in the garage which was attached to the home and spread rapidly.

Responding fire crews spotted plumes of smoke on route and shortly after arriving on scene, assistance was called from Brighton Township, Alnwick/Haldimand Township and the Municipality of Trent Hills.

Firefighters fought in vain to save the structure, but a steel roof made it difficult to get at the flames and the house was to well involved for an interior attack.

Heavy machinery was brought in to gain access to the fire in the home.

The home was completely destroyed by fire said Cramahe Township Deputy Chief Matt Halmasy.

The origin of the fire is believed to be in the garage, but the exact cause is unknown at this time.

There were no injuries to the occupant of the home but a dog is missing.

The fire has been deemed not suspicious and damage is estimated at $700,000.
