Transport Wheel Assembly Was An Accident Waiting to Happen

In Editor Choice, Local, Police Blotter

Police said it was just a matter of time before a set of dual wheels came off of a transport on Highway 401 on Tuesday, January 24, 2023.

Northumberland OPP received several calls from motorists travelling westbound on Highway 401 just west of Cobourg about a dual set of wheels on a trailer around 11 a.m.

Police spotted the trailer at Theatre Road and pulled the vehicle over at the Ministry of Transportation Yard in Port Hope at County Road 28 for an inspection.

The inner wheel on the duel wheel assembly had been ripped apart with pieces wrapped around the axle.

Part of the wheel assembly had come off and it was basically metal on metal for the wheel assembly going down the highway.  The outside rim had become so hot that it had actually discoloured the entire rim.

Police said it’s likely the entire dual wheel assembly would have become dislodged within a very short time span if not for the numerous callers that contacted police.

The plates were seized from the trailer.

The driver is charged with unsafe commercial motor vehicle, no electronic logging device and improper trip inspection. The company is also facing numerous charges.
