Damage could reach in excess of one million dollars following a house fire at a heritage home in Hamilton Township on Friday, December 30, 2022.

Hamilton Township Fire Department received the call for a structure fire at 3017 Harwood Road shortly after 9 a.m.

District Chief Mike Robinson said when fire crews got on scene there was heavy smoke coming from the roof area to the two storey home built in 1870.

The fire was confined to the attic, but extremely difficult to access because of the steel roof.

“Definitely difficult when you have these old homes where there is multiple levels of roof and multiple compartments, but as the same token that compartmentalisation also helps to contain the fire.”

Firefighters from Hamilton Township along with Alnwick/Haldimand Township and Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services who were called in for tanker support and manpower to battle the fire from the inside tearing through the ceiling along with from the outside peeling back the metal roof then sawing through the wooden roof.

Robinson said home suffered heavy fire, smoke and water damage with estimated in excess of one million dollars.

It’s believe the fire started at the front of the home in the roof area, but firefighters haven’t determined an exact cause.

There was no one home at the time of the fire.
