After several days of rain and unsettled weather, Cobourg finally got the kind of summer Sunday everyone had been waiting for.
Sunday, August 9, 2026, brought sunshine, warm temperatures and a simple invitation: head to the beach.
And that’s exactly what thousands of people did.
Victoria Beach was packed for much of the day as residents and visitors took advantage of the beautiful weather and made the most of what was shaping up to be a classic summer day along the Lake Ontario waterfront.
Beach towels stretched across the sand, people cooled off in the lake and the waterfront was alive with the sounds and activity that come with a busy August weekend.
But with the influx of people came another familiar summer visitor — parking problems.
As spaces disappeared, some motorists apparently decided that the parking rules were more of a suggestion than a regulation.
A number of vehicles were ticketed for parking in designated no-parking areas, with the fine set at $50.
One motorist who received a ticket spoke with Today’s Northumberland and seemed to take the situation in stride.
He said he wasn’t particularly upset about receiving the ticket, considering what the Town charges for day parking.
It was, perhaps, a case of choosing your parking spot — and accepting the consequences.
And while parking proved to be a challenge for some, another summer problem continued to make an appearance on Charles Street.
Despite signage and road markings, a number of drivers still appear to be directionally challenged when it comes to travelling on the downtown street.
Motorists have once again been spotted travelling the wrong way.
On Sunday, one driver received a particularly unexpected reminder that Charles Street is a two-way road when the vehicle came face-to-face with a fire truck travelling south.
Fortunately, there was no emergency at the time.
It could have been a very different story if the fire department had been responding to a call.
For most people, however, Sunday was simply about enjoying the beach.
After a stretch of wet and gloomy weather, Cobourg finally got a day that looked and felt like August.
Victoria Beach was busy, the waterfront was buzzing and Lake Ontario provided the perfect backdrop.
