Cobourg Council – Mayor Confident of Progress on VIA/GO Projects

In City Hall

The campaign to expand the community’s vital transportation resources continues without pause, Mayor John Henderson assured Cobourg council this week.

Results from the survey designed to restore commuter-friendly VIA Train 651 to service are being counted, with 2,800 responses so far from an area that spans Port Hope to Kingston.

“We’re hoping to put pressure on the president of VIA, the Minister of Transportation and, of course, the Federal government to return Train 651 for a 7 a.m. start,” Henderson said.

And the planned September introduction of on-demand service that will pick up local residents in Port Hope and Cobourg and transport them to the Oshawa GO station is still due to begin next month.

Henderson thanked Northumberland-Peterborough South MPP David Piccini and MP Philip Lawrence for their help with these projects.

“I would also like to make clear to the public that we believe we need both services,” he stated.

“We believe we need top-end transit – but also believe that we need VIA, so I don’t want one to be dominated, certainly, by the other.”
