Port Hope Fire Seeking Assistance in Snow Clearing Around Fire Hydrants

In City Hall, Local

Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services is requesting assistance from residents to help clear snow surrounding fire hydrants.

“Every second counts in an emergency and our Firefighters need to find and access hydrants quickly,” notes Fire Chief Dan Smith, Director of Fire and Emergency Services for the Municipality of Port Hope.

“We are noticing that there are several hydrants buried in snow right now throughout the Municipality and we are asking all residents to make snow clearing around them a priority. Firefighters need your assistance in making fire hydrants visible. A snow cleared fire hydrant will assist us in protecting life and property.”

It is the responsibility of property owners to ensure that fire hydrants are clear of snow, per section 3.5 of By-law 68-2017, (Fire Hydrant Obstruction and Interference By-law), which states, “during winter months, all citizens shall clear snow from around the fire hydrant nearest to their homes to help the Operating Authority in maintaining visibility and accessibility to fire Hydrants, unless alternate arrangements have been made for snow removal to the satisfaction of the Municipality of Port Hope.”

For those who are unable to clear snow around the hydrants, please contact the Fire Administration Office at 905-753-2230 for assistance.

Snow removal and clean up is ongoing throughout Port Hope after the storm earlier this week, and the Municipality appreciates the community’s assistance and patience.
