Update – Superintendent of Education Reaffirming Students Stay Away from Former Sidbrook Hospital

In Local, Police Blotter

Superintendent of Education with Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board educating students of the dangers being inside the former Sidbrook Hospital in Cobourg.

This comes after 23-students from Cobourg Collegiate Institute were found inside the former hospital on King Street East on Wednesday, October 27, 2021.

Cobourg Police were called initially, then members of the Cobourg Fire Department were called and donning breathing apparatus searched inside the facility to confirm no other students were inside.

“Yesterday, at mid-day, the school received a call from Cobourg Police (CPS) asking for staff to attend the abandoned Sidbrook property east of the school,” said James Brake, Superintendent of Education.

“Upon arrival, school administrators worked with CPS to share with the approximately 23 students who were on the property the safety concerns associated with this property due to rotting floors, missing stairs and the possibility of exposure to asbestos inside the building.

School administration continues to work actively with students, parents and Cobourg Police Services to ensure students understand they are not to be on this property,  at any time,  for safety reasons.

Administration has contacted all families of students on the property yesterday to reiterate these safety concerns, and we continue to monitor this issue in partnership with Cobourg Police Services.“
