Letter to the Editor

Re your closing of the 2020 salmon season,

Very sad. Your ‘research’ of salmon fishing and opinions on it being unsafe are truly false, and Toronto-like, in nature. How many council members are from Toronto I wonder? Why don’t you try TRUSTING people to make correct and safe decisions. If you look at statistics from jurisdictions that have allowed harbours, fishing, etc., to be open, ‘you people’ would be surprised to see that there is no plethura of Covid cases. You are scare-mongering your constituents who have lived there, or visited there for years.

Let it be known I am a well off retired teacher having worked for both University of Toronto, and Durham District School Board. I, or my family, or any of my friends and associates, will NEVER visit Port Hope again. We will NEVER stop for gas, food, or accommodation again. We will NEVER contribute another dime to your failed municipality’s coffers. You should be ashamed of yourselves!

Next time you make idiotic, knee-jerk decisions, do some research. Listen to ALL potentially affected parties. Don’t ASSUME you are doing the right thing, or ‘protecting’ your municipality. You are merely cow-towing to your ex-Toronto constituents, including yourselves, who have probably never fished a day in their/your lives. SHAME!
