The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) can confirm that the pilot who was reported missing after failing to return to Oshawa Executive Airport has been located deceased following an extensive multi-agency search effort in the City of Kawartha Lakes.
On August 14, 2026, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) requested OPP assistance in searching for an overdue private aircraft believed to have been operating in the Balsam Lake area near Kirkfield. The pilot had been reported missing by family members, and the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) was investigating the missing person occurrence.
Over several days, members of the OPP, including front-line members from the City of Kawartha Lakes detachment, the Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU), Aviation Services, and other specialized resources, worked alongside partner agencies in an extensive search of the area.
On August 16, 2026, aircraft debris was recovered from Wolfe Lake. Search efforts continued with the support of the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR).
On August 18, 2026, searchers located the aircraft submerged in Wolfe Lake and confirmed the pilot was deceased.
An extraction plan is being coordinated by investigators.
The OPP extends its sincere condolences to the pilot’s family and loved ones and thanks members of the public who provided information, support and assistance throughout the search effort.
The circumstances surrounding the aircraft crash are now under investigation by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB), the independent federal agency responsible for a dvancing transportation safety through the investigation of aviation occurrences. The OPP will continue to assist as required.
