Capitol Theatre In Port Hope Celebrates 90th Anniversary

In Editor Choice, entertainment

It was a weekend celebration in Port Hope as the Capitol Theatre celebrated its 90th anniversary.

On August 15, 1930, the Capitol Theatre opened its doors as a movie theatre. Reportedly the Capitol Theatre was the first movie theatre in Canada to be designed specifically for talkies. It was also a captivating “atmospheric” theatre. Patrons walked into a beautiful medieval courtyard at twilight. The Capitol offered its audience an opportunity to enter a magical world and escape from the challenges of everyday life during the depression of the 1930’s.

During the 1990s the theatre went through a museum-quality restoration. The beauty of the original theatre was restored. The theatre would continue to offer movies, but with the restoration and renovation, the Capitol Theatre could also offer live stage performances.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, people were not allowed in the theatre, but were entertained along Queen Street with a variety of music and singing from the balcony of the theatre along Queen Street.

From Friday evening, until Sunday there were a variety of performances along Queen Street including a parade of vehicles from the Antique & Classic Car Club of Canada.
