Northumberland Humane Society Helping Find “Forever Homes” For Dogs From the North

In Community, Editor Choice, Local

In response to many caring and compassionate Northern communities, the Ontario SPCA has declared 2018 the Year of the Northern Dog.
The Northumberland Humane Society, in partnership with the Ontario SPCA has recently received two dogs from Northern Ontario – Vicki and Asia arrived at the Northumberland Humane Society on April 28th and are now ready to find their forever families!
Over 20 dogs were transferred from an isolated community from the Northern Ontario/Manitoba border that wanted to find homes for its community dogs. The dogs flew to Thunder Bay, which were then transferred to humane societies through Southern Ontario.
Many barriers exist in the North that do not exist in the South. In remote Northern communities, resources and access to animal welfare services, such as veterinarians and spay/neuter services, are often limited.
“We are thrilled to be part of such a wonderful initiative and look forward to seeing Asia and Vicki in their new forever homes,” said General Manager of the Northumberland Humane Society Kate Lennan.
“It’s important that we all work together to bring awareness to the dog overpopulation in Northern Ontario”
The Northumberland Humane Society is a charitable community resource, dedicated to finding loving forever homes for over 500 each year. To meet Asia and Vicki, please visit the NHS at 371 Ward Street in Port Hope.
The Year of the Northern Dog is an evolving initiative that will support programs intended to bring awareness, attention and action to the serious animal welfare issue of Northern dog overpopulation.
