Northumberland OPP Seize Large Quantity of Purple Heroin and Uzi Sub-Machine Gun in “Routine” Traffic Stop

In Editor Choice, Police Blotter

A Uber driver passing through Northumberland County on Saturday morning was shocked to learn the three passengers had a large quantity of illegal drugs and were also in possession of a sub-machine gun.

Northumberland OPP were patrolling Highway 401 on Saturday, June 13, 2020 and at approximately 2 a.m. conducted a traffic stop in the eastbound lanes, just west of Brighton.

Sgt. Matt Caissie said as a result of the traffic stop, police searched the vehicle and found a quantity of drugs including approximately 130 grams of purple heroin, methanphetamine, Xanax, an unknown substance along with a Uzi-pistol with a fully loaded 20-round magazine.

Caissie said the gun is classified as a prohibited weapon in Canada along with the magazine holding the 20-rounds.

Although police commonly deal with a number of situations, Caissie said the stop was a “reality check.”

“We are used to expect the unexpected.”

“We don’t see many of these weapons, but sadly it’s becoming more and more the norm.”

“I don’t know that you ever expect it. But you have to consider it a possibility everytime.”

Another person that didn’t expect what was found in the vehicle was the Uber driver.

“He was surprised certainly. He didn’t have any idea at all what was in the vehicle.”

A 19-year-old, 21-year-old and a youth from the Durham Region are facing various charges and were held for bail.

The youth was released under conditions.
