Bear Sighting A Little To Close For Comfort For One Port Hope Resident

In Local

It was a little to close for comfort after a Port Hope resident spotted a bear beside his living room window on Sunday, April 26, 2020.

Shortly after 9 p.m. Rick Trumper was watching tv in the living room of his home on Cumberland Street when he heard a noise outside.

“I thought at first it was raccoons and I was going to go out and take the bird feeders down.”

“Next thing I know there was something standing looking at me. It was a bear which proceeded to rip down all our bird feeders.”

Trumper said he got a “real close look at the bear.”

While Trumper phoned 9-1-1 the bear ate what was left of bird seed.

After, the bear moseyed to the front of the house and helped itself to some water in a dogbowl on the front porch.

Last Trumper saw the bear, it was walking down his front steps to the street.

Trumer said he’s never spotted a bear before since living at the home for five years.

Port Hope Police checked the ravine from area yards but could find no sighting of the bear.

Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry advises if a bear is in the area to remove anything that could be potential food including bird feeders.

If there is no food, the bear will likely move on.

Residents in the Cumberland Street, Highland Drive area are asked to use caution in case the bear is still in the area.
