Workers from Campbell Monuments installed the first ever memorial in Roseneath on Monday, September 30, 2019.

It’s the first time there has been a memorial in honour of the men and women of Alnwick Township who served in the South African War, First World War, Second World War and Korean War.

The memorial with 108 names was installed at The Corner’s which is located on County Road 45 and County Road 24.

The project was done completely by members of the Roseneath Revitalization Committee including Barry Sureus, Kate McNamara, Suzzane Hogg, Rosemarie Robins, All Parker, Sherry Gibson and Donna Bevan with a one-year fundraising initiative raising the $55,000.

Committee member Donna Bevan said Veteran’s Affairs Canada donated $25,000.

There was also a chance for anyone to purchase bricks that will be along a pathway.

Depending on the size of brick the cost ranged from $500 to $100.

There was 133 bricks sold raising $26,000 and along with other groups donating including, Cobourg Legion, Port Hope, Grafton Legion all donated towards the memorial.

From the moment the workers arrived Bevan stayed until it was pieced together several hours later.

“It looks so much better seeing it, because until now I’ve only seen it on paper.”

The Roseneath Revitalization Committee has been around for many years and one of its goals it to, “try and make the village a bit better than what it is.”

The memorial will be officially unveiled on November 11 during Remembrance Day ceremonies.
