Northumberland OPP – Driver Veers off Emergency Detour Route and Strikes Overpass

In Police Blotter

The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a single vehicle collision on Boes Road just east of the town of Brighton.
On March 10, 2019 the westbound lanes of Highway 401 in Brighton were closed due to a collision that resulted in an Emergency Detour Route (EDR) to be put into place. At approximately 4:30 pm a male driving a transport truck without a trailer made a decision to veer off the EDR and proceed southbound on Boes Road when it struck the concrete CN Railway overpass. Witnesses followed the vehicle and updated police on its location until it was stopped after merging back onto the Highway 401.
A 23-year-old male from Brampton, Ontario was charged with the following offences under the Highway Traffic Act:
Fail to Remain
Fail to Report
Careless Driving
Disobey Sign
Fail to accurately complete daily inspection report
He is scheduled to appear in Cobourg Court on May 8, 2019.
No injuries were reported and only minor damage was sustained to the CN Railway overpass. The transport truck was towed off the highway.
